The Talking Mirror

A pair of honey-brown eyes peered at Glassia. They were red-rimmed and puffy.

It is not an uncommon occurrence for someone to stare at Glassia seeing as she's a mirror. In fact, it has happened thousands of times since Glassia is over five hundred years old.

The honey brown eyes shifted across Glassia's surface as if looking for a glitch, a flaw. They were inquisitive, searching.

"Do you think…" Honey brown eyes said, then shook her head a little before starting again, " Do you think I'm beautiful?"

Glassia wanted to tell her that yes she thought she was beautiful but the girl broke down in tears.

"I.. I know I'm not supposed to care." Mumbled honey brown with a weak voice. "I know they say these things to get under my skin but I can't take it anymore. The.. looks, the whispers." She finished brokenly.

Not for the first time, Glassia wished she had hands to cradle this girl, this broken child, and protect her from the world. But alas she couldn't do that. The only comfort she could offer this girl is a few heartfelt words that will change nothing.

"You are beautiful, darling. Very much so." said Glassia. Honey brown eyes gazed up at her in bewilderment. "Yes, dear, I can talk. Magic mirror, very old and all that jazz." Glassia responded to Honey brown eyes' unasked question.

This startled a laugh, weak and watery, from the girl. "Oh my god, I'm imagining things now. I have gone and gotten myself crazy. A talking mirror. Great, just great."

Glassia made an indignant sound, "excuse you! Yes, a talking mirror."

"But how? That's not possible." The girl said while looking bewildered and lost.

Glassia wished, not for the first time, mind, that she can roll her eyes in exasperation. Yes, a talking mirror is an impossibility. But electricity and talking machines were impossible to imagine a few hundred years ago.

"Anything is possible, child, if you believe in it enough. And to answer your question, I was enchanted for the purpose of spying on a very old king back when this place didn't even exist on the map yet. The witch who controlled me never really said how she did it. If I was once human or not. I have no memories of anything beyond my status as a reflective surface."
